A subtle Saturday

I consider this my first official post - cheers to me! My niece is mastering her afternoon nap upstairs while I sit on the porch of her parents' farmhouse enjoying some ridiculous fall weather. This is the kind of mid-November day that I don't know whether to fully embrace for its beauty - the warm, gentle breeze carrying crunchy, multi-colored leaves across the fields stretched out before me, the sun setting early over the baby's cloth diapers drying on the line - or fear its blatant proof of global warming. The wind chimes call out to me to worry another day; we took the House and the Senate after all so what the hell.

There are ladybugs everywhere out here. I see them crawling along the porch testing their red backs against the red leaves. Don't they need to head south for the winter or something? That is, if winter ever comes. This being my first winter back on the east coast in 6 years, I am most definitely going south. On January 16 I am flying to Nicaragua and from there the plan is to explore as much of South America as possible before the money runs out or the credit cards overeat. (Obesity affects all things American, not just our youth but also our debt and sense of righteousness.) Why this journey? This escape? Because I am 30 and if I don't go now I may never go. Because I am unemployed and must determine if professional jetsetter is my future. Because I want to speak Spanish, lots of it. Because I am BORED and a grand adventure is the perfect cure. Because I am lucky enough to have the opportunity. Because I want to experience cultures, daily rituals, cafes, landscapes and people different from those I am accustomed to. Just because.

Is nap time almost over? For some it never ends. Until next time... peace.
